The Story of ABODA New Zealand
On February 6, 2017, a “Dream Team” of Music Directors from around New Zealand met in Wellington. Their aim was to discuss and lay the groundwork for the formation of a National “umbrella” organisation to bring together all the various instrumental ensemble organisations around the country.
Those in attendance were Rodger Fox (Jazz), David Bremner (Brass Bands), Larry Reese (NZSO), Helen Renaud (Orchestral, South Island), Kathleen Mulligan (NZ Concert Bands Assoc. President), Evan Sayer (Brass Bands Assoc. President), Darren Smith (General Manager, Musicworks) and Andrew Stopps (Founder).
Out of this meeting came the foundations for ABODA, it’s aims, mission and constitution and the amalgamation of the Wellington Band and Orchestra Festival as the National ABODA Festival. We affirmed our commitment to each other and to help to Create Better Conductors in New Zealand/Aotearoa.
