The Story of ABODA New Zealand

On February 6, 2017, a “Dream Team” of Music Directors from around New Zealand met in Wellington. Their aim was to discuss and lay the groundwork for the formation of a National “umbrella” organisation to bring together all the various instrumental ensemble organisations around the country.

Those in attendance were Rodger Fox (Jazz), David Bremner (Brass Bands), Larry Reese (NZSO), Helen Renaud (Orchestral, South Island), Kathleen Mulligan (NZ Concert Bands Assoc. President), Evan Sayer (Brass Bands Assoc. President), Darren Smith (General Manager, Musicworks) and Andrew Stopps (Founder).

Out of this meeting came the foundations for ABODA, it’s aims, mission and constitution and the amalgamation of the Wellington Band and Orchestra Festival as the National ABODA Festival. We affirmed our commitment to each other and to help to Create Better Conductors in New Zealand/Aotearoa.

Our mission and vision

The Association of Band and Orchestra Directors’ Aotearoa (ABODA) aims to be New Zealand’s premier in-service support organisation for school and community band and orchestra directors, pledging ongoing commitment to the growth of music education and community music making throughout all areas of the country.

Schools

Supporting and training school music teachers in the direction of instrumental music ensembles.

Community

To provide support and training to community instrumental ensemble directors.

Professionals

To provide on-going training and development to professional level conductors.

National Festival

We offer an annual National Band and Orchestra Festival in Wellington every August to provide an opportunity for ensembles of all levels to perform and receive feedback and be involved in workshops.

Education and Workshops

We will invite conductors and music directors from around the world to New Zealand to share their skills and help develop conducting skills amongst our members.

Mentors

The ABODA Mentor Program is open to all 1st-3rd year teachers, as well as conductors new to working with an ensemble. Our goal is to pair young and/or new teachers and conductors with experienced conductors who can lead them professionally to meet the needs of their ensemble members.

Be a part of our National Band and Orchestra Festival

The Wellington Band and Orchestra Festival is the national festival for ABODA. It has been successfully running since 2012 and has had over 2000 musicians across its stages since then.
